“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”

Colossians 4:6

The phrase, “always with grace” means graciousness. It also has the idea of the Lord’s influence upon our hearts and its reflection in our life. We know the tongue has incredible power for good or for evil; a kind word can build you up. Proverbs 10:20-21 say “The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. 21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.” Love to give compliments.

Before your speech can be “always with grace,” you need grace in your heart. Luke 6:45 says “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” A person, who says kind things, has a kind heart, a person who says negative things, has a negative heart likewise a person who says mean things, has a mean heart. What’s inside comes out.

Would the Lord approve of your speech? How do you speak? Apostle Paul saw the need for us to as believers to check our speech especially when talking to those who are not Christians. His concern was that our speech be grateful, reflecting the beauty of our Saviour and it must be inviting to others. Speaking with the right speech to unbelievers is vital to our ability to witness to them. Determine to control your tongue, say only good things about others and remember you are going to be accountable for every word you spoke on the Day of Judgment (Matthew 12:36).

What you say tells so much about you. Every time you speak, people judge you by the words you use. Do your words, build others up, or tear them down? Do they it show the love of Christ or drive them away from the Lord. Let Colossians 4:6 be our speech check, “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”
