“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32

Freedom is on everyone’s lips almost all the time but it is most often misunderstood and seldom practiced. Everyone wants to be free. The teenager who is being coerced to study by a parent says “Let me be free please”. The leader of the women’s liberation movement is preaching about freedom with respect to the other sex. They do not want to be tied down by any He- man.

Even countries want to be free and they are paying a high price for the freedom o f the land. Bloodshed, martyrs, sacrifice, suffering and then the freedom comes. What happens after that? The generation that does not know the meaning and cost of freedom just throw it away.

Throughout men’s lives most are on the quest or the search for something. Some peoples’ quest is focused on money, some on power, and some on fame. Some people’s life’s mission is to save a tree or the environment. Some have very noble quests of humanitarian advocacy or to simply find a good spouse and raise a godly family.

The advent of the Internet has only made matters all the more worse. Young minds are trapped in pornography. It is deadlier than drug addiction. The hours spent in chatting and browsing under cover of anonymity ultimately destroys the person. It is leading to breaking up of personalities and of families. Is there a way out?

True freedom is in knowing who you are. It is in knowing your destiny. It is in perceiving your strengths and your weaknesses. That person is free who does not put the onus on physical beauty but in the beauty of the mind and clarity of thought. True freedom is in knowing that we are sinners but have been made righteous by the blood of the lamb and that our destiny is to be with our Lord through eternity. True freedom is freedom in the spirit. “If the Son sets you free you will be free indeed” John 8:36. It is only Jesus Christ who can set a person free.

“You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free” John 8:32. Galatians 5:1 says “Christ has set us free for freedom”. Are you truly free?
