Friday, June 18th – Searching For Contentment

We turn from God, the source of life the only one who really knows what we need, and the only one who is actually able to give it to us to go our own way. To do things the way we think they should be done. To chase after what we think are the things that we really need. Digging our own cisterns and these cisterns are broken and they don’t hold water.

The new car was cool for a while, but it no longer does it for you. The latest cell phone technol- ogy is fun, but really life is about the same. You hoped in some relationship or some accomplish- ment or an experience and it was great for a while and then you turned to something else and it let you down and then something else and it didn’t fill you up either because it wasn’t meant to.

God wants us to turn to Him again and again to be filled with living water, trusting in Him, depending on Him, waiting on Him. When you are stressed out, depressed or anxious, do you turn somewhere other than God? If you do, that’s an indicator that you trust something other than God for what you need.

You’ve chased after everything you thought would satisfy your soul and it’s left you empty, you and I have been idolaters, we’ve built our own cisterns and they don’t hold water and they leave us empty hearted. It is said that we spent our first 50 years searching for security and the rest of our lives looking for significance but we don’t have to, the hymn writer wrote, “Now none but Christ can satisfy, no other name for me. There’s love, life, and lasting joy, Lord Jesus found in thee!”
