And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.”

Mark 1:20

In the early century, a Jewish man who wished to become a disciple of a rabbi i.e. teacher was expected to leave his family and job to join his teacher. They would live together all day moving from place to place, teaching and learning, studying and working. The disciple’s calling as described is about basic ethics was to “cover himself in the dust of the rabbi’s feet,” taking in every word. He followed his rabbi so closely that he would “walk in his dust.” In doing so, he became like his master, the rabbi.

The early apostles, Simon, Andrew, James and John knew that this was the type of relationship Jesus was calling them into, so immediately they walked away from their vocation and followed him. For 3 years, they stayed close to Him, listening to His teaching, eating with Him, learning and watching His miracles, learning His principles and walking in His dust.

If we are to be Jesus followers today as we claim, we too must be ready to “walk in His dust” by spending time studying and meditating on His word and applying the principles to life we will become like our Rabbi, Jesus. Faith in Christ is not just a single step of answering the altar call or praying the sinner’s prayer and accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour, it is a lifelong walk with Him.
