“It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.”

Psalm 119:71

Most people feel anything but spiritual when they hit bottom. Their misery is often reinforced by Christians who take a very shortsighted view of what the sufferer is going through and why. But our heavenly Father is well-pleased with what He intends to bring out of such a painful pro- cess. A person who knows the secret of the God-dependent life can say, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.”

Do not misunderstand the hurting seasons, they birth the healing process. Pain forces you to Look to the Word of God for Answers. It forces you to lean on the Arm of God instead of man; it forces you to learn where you went astray. Pain forces you to long for the Presence of God and His healing; it forces you to listen for changes in God’s instructions.

My dear friends, we all know that afflictions are a difficult part of our life. That hurt, that groaning, that wasting away, but, as the Psalmist said, there are moments of learning. He said, “It is good for me.”

This precious soul learned the goodness of God because the Lord has made us a promise that He will never leave us, nor forsake us, and so David learned that as afflictions came and even in the hour of death God was there.

In affliction we draw hope from the grace of God. We know about the grace of God because we experienced that when we were saved, the song writer describes the ultimate end of grace; “thru many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; twas grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home.” With all the suffering each day they awoke, they experienced a new phase of God’s grace that continued until they arrived home.
