“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.”

Galatians 6:1

It is our job as Christians to restore the one who has been overtaken in a fault. Restore comes from a Greek word that means, to reconcile fractions, to set broken bones, to set a dislocation, to mend nets, to equip or prepare. We are one body as Christians and thus we must do all in our effort to restore fallen members because what affects one affects all. When a member becomes dislocated he needs to be restored.

Sin in our life dislocates us, a dislocated arm is not in a correct relationship to the body and so a Christian with sin in his life is dislocated from the body. Dislocation causes pain, a dislocated joint causes pain. A dislocated arm is a hindrance so is a dislocated Christian.

All Christians need a kind of instruction and encouragement, especially new believers. As we set aside old habits and learn new ways of thinking and acting, we may frequently stumble and fall. It’s then that we need help from believers who are more mature in their faith. New Chris- tians don’t need someone pointing fingers at them and making pious, judgmental pronounce- ments. And no one should ever laugh at them.

Lord, help us to be encouragers, remembering Paul’s words that we too are subject to weak- nesses and to falling. Help us to bear the burdens of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

In resetting a broken bone, only a qualify doctor should do it because it is a delicate piece of work that requires much patience. Therefore in restoring the fallen, the Christian worker must be spiritual to do this work, he must be gentle, tactful, loving and kind. The worker must be careful lest he be led into temptation himself.

A little encouragement can make the difference between giving up or going on.
