“And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”

2 Corinthians 11:14

Jesus didn’t beat around the bush. He told the truth about the devil. He is a liar. There is no truth in him whatsoever. So we should know, then, that when he tempts us he is placing a lie before us. And we should not cave in to the temptation.

When Satan gets his claws in you, he does not just want to scratch you up and send you a mes- sage, but to completely gobble you up and destroy any ounce of faith and belief in you. He mas- querades as one who wants to have fun with you, who wants to tease you, who tells little white lies, who is all about harmless pranks, but all this is a lie; he is our enemy. Do not spend time with him. Do not listen to him. Do not consider for a moment any temptation he places before you. He is the prince or ruler of darkness. There is no light in him whatsoever. Jesus is the light of the world. Satan is the dark ruler of all evil.

We have made up a description of what Satan looks like as well. Unfortunately the red suit, horns and pitch fork are not his usual attire. If we knew his face and what he was wearing, we could easily identify him and avoid his attacks but he is among us and we don’t even know it. So it’s not his appearance that we need to be so focused on, rather it is his behavior. Looks can be deceiving but behavior never lies.

If the devil can get us to think of him like that, then when he comes as an ‘angel of light,’ he will not be recognized, and so find it easier to beguile his unsuspecting victims.”

When we trust Christ as Savior, we have peace with God, but at the same time we come into conflict with the devil. Our “adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). That’s why the Bible says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11).

We who know Christ can overcome the devil and the evil he creates by learning and obeying God’s Word. And let’s be thankful that He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

The devil may be out of fashion, but He’s not out of business. Guide me Lord away from the masquerade of Satan’s deceptive lies and into your strengthening truth.
