“Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.”

Acts 8:4

Not many of us are teachers. Not many of us are ordained. But all of us who are filled with the goodness of God and who know His righteousness see that it’s good and proper to join with all the saints in telling the whole world of what God has done for us.

Friends, remember, these people aren’t ordained preachers of doctrine; they’re just every day Christians. They weren’t official heralds, but they were witnesses, and what they knew they proclaimed: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, and He is worthy to be praised.

They preached the word “everywhere” they went. Think of how Paul and Silas sang and praised God even in the prison. When the jailer asked what he needed to do to be saved, they preached saying, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shall be saved”.

God gave them a new nature and a new mind. He planted His seed in them that they might bear the good fruits that give Him glory. And so they couldn’t resist preaching even at the risk of death because it was the work of God. We preach for the exact same reason today: God is good and He’s worthy to be praised.

The church in Jerusalem had to move beyond barriers in order to spread the gospel. There had to be a break out. This is true today. God’s people need to overcome barriers that hinder the gospel.

God still calls people to tell the good news of Jesus to those who don’t know Him. In his book ‘The Conversion of The Church’, Samuel Shoemaker states, “The demand is human heart-hun- ger. The supply is the grace of God. We are only distributors.” But we don’t work alone or with mere human energy. God is working in us (Philippians 2:13).

When witnessing for Christ, may it be with love and humility—motivated by a desire for His glory, not our own. We’re just here to tell the story.

God desires to help you break the barriers that are hindering you and be fruitful in His service. He wants you to make a difference in your church, community and world. It requires a willing heart. God used the believers in Jerusalem because they were willing. God has left us in the world to witness to the world.
