“Thus says the LORD: “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.”

Jeremiah 6:16

God’s ways are timeless. So what are God’s ways? Most of us couldn’t recognize “these ways” therefore we can’t return to them. God instructs Jeremiah the prophet to see and ask for the “ancient paths” again.

The old way isn’t the popular way; it is being abandoned daily by people who have decided that new is better. They are leaving the Bible, the old songs of the faith, old fashioned worship, praising the Lord, and preaching. Seeker services are replacing old time worship of the Lord. Yet, God has not changed.

Today’s religion is a religion of tolerance. They say we must tolerate every wind of doctrine, every new fad, we must conclude that one way is just as beneficial as another. We must conclude that different religions are only different ways of serving and worshipping the same God. We must conclude that all ways must lead to the same end. Even in our own doctrinal teachings, for the so-called sake of unity, we must “agree to disagree.” To this I cry foul, for this is not God’s design.

There was a time when schoolchildren were taught kindness, purity, loyalty, obedience to authority, and reverence for God. Back then, newspaper and magazine articles reflected the belief that we are moral beings who should exercise self-restraint and seek the good of others. Today, this idea has largely been scrapped and replaced with the concept that we can be happy only when we have freedom to fulfill our every selfish desire.

Rejecting the old paths is not new. In Jeremiah’s day, people weren’t ashamed of their sins and when the prophet pleaded for them to return to the “good way,” they responded, “We will not walk in it”. In this 21st century there is a need to restore the “old paths” of Christianity and restore the biblical world view. God is still in control. We must stand in the way of the truth and refuse to compromise.

There was no compromise in the preaching and teaching of Jesus or the apostles. Compromise is the door to apostasy. Compromise involves giving into something that is not the truth. The door of compromising has been open and many are walking through it. In these last days we are being told to “unity in diversity,” accept the doctrine all paths led to God. It doesn’t matter what God we pray to. Good deeds are all that counts.

Dear friends, let us resolve to accept nothing but God’s Word, accept nothing but the truth of God’s Word. God has not changed, the enemies are changing the signs, but the Lord knows the way, therefore let us ask Him and He will lead. Jesus is the Way, prepare to return to the ‘old path’.
