12th February 2021 – Be Perfect

A call to perfection is a call to holiness, God commands us to be holy; “Be ye holy for I am holy”, 1 Pet 1:16; Lev.11:44-45. You know, there is not much more that we need to know than that. God said it. That settles it.

As a child I don’t know how many times I demanded a reason why I couldn’t do something I heard my mom or dad say the words, “Because I said so.” Have you ever heard such a response? “Mom, why can’t I stay out till midnight tonight?” “Because I said so, love.” You didn’t have to hear much more than that. You may demand a better answer than that, and it may be good to give a better answer than that sometimes, but it was settled just because mom said so.

Jesus commanded us to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect, we don’t need any other reason to seek perfection than that. He said that’s what He wants for His people and that’s what we should be.

God’s plan for His children is for them not only to be saved from their sins, but also be made holy. And because that is His will, He will, in His time, lead His children into that work of grace. Many have said that there is no way that we can be perfect or victorious over sin because we are human we will still sin every day in word, thought, and deed and so there is no way we can be perfect.

Jesus told the woman caught in adultery, “Go and sin no more.” God does not want us to sin, in fact, He commands us not to sin. And if I understand who He is, He will never expect something from us that He doesn’t give us the power to do. If He has told us, “Go and sin no more,” I believe He can give us the power to do just that. God has provided a way for us to be completely filled with His Spirit and His power so that we can live above sin and therefore be perfect.
