“Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.”

Ephesians 4:25

Intentional deceit is another plague riddling our society. A poll says one-third of all adults (32%) claim that “the way things are these days, lying is sometimes necessary.” We live in a world where truthfulness and lies are no longer able to be distinguished. We live in a world where stu- dents make a great effort to cheat. We live in a world that thinks it is necessary to lie to get by.

Paul points out in Ephesians that as Christians, we are to be people committed to the truth. The general character of this new person we have become is one who is committed to “true righ- teousness and holiness.”

A father took one of his children to a store to buy things and a deliveryman came into the store. He didn’t see a TV set perched on a stand, and with his cart stacked high with boxes he hit the television and sent it crashing to the floor. As father and son watched, the store manager said, “Don’t worry. We won’t make you pay for it. We’ll just tell the manufacturer it was damaged in shipping, and he’ll give us a new one.” The father, a believer in Christ, left the store without making a purchase. He did not want to give his business to a man who would lie without giving it a thought.

It’s pretty tough not to fall into a pattern of lying. But if we give in to the temptation to lie, soon we are doing it so often that we’re not even aware of it anymore. It becomes a way of life. What we don’t realize is that for the few cash we may save, we’ve sold out on a basic principle of the Bible and compromised our witness for Christ.

Tell the truth and tell it right, a lie will never do; the Bible says that God is truth and He wants truth from you. Paul says that we are all part of one another and are all members in the same body. We are all part of the Body of Christ and so should do whatever we can to build it up. Our relationships with one another should be valued and we should not jeopardize them with dis- honesty and lies.
