“Lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.”

Hebrews 12:16

Though Esau has been called by the bible as godless but he is not necessarily a bad person. Like many other common neighbor today, Esau is a good son, a good brother and maybe a good citizen. However, he was called godless because he decided to live his life without God.

Godless Esau is a mirror of many people today. Godless means they do not have God in their lives. They do not want to obey God. They want to do their own thing. Esau is motivated by his love for this world. He doesn’t care for his eternal future. He doesn’t care God. He doesn’t care for spiritual ways. He doesn’t care for his soul.

Godless people are like wandering sheep in the desert without shepherd. They want all the freedom to do all what is pleasing to their eyes. They don’t want any master to tell them what they should do. They hate the idea of keeping any divine laws hence they reject the idea of having a God who must be obeyed and followed.

Person without God often make a dead wrong decision. Esau chooses the wrong priority. He is interested only for what can satisfy the longing of his flesh. He cares only for his stomach and he doesn’t care for the things that will please God.

Esau’s attention is focus only on the things of this world. He is a picture of a person who decides to choose the wrong pleasure instead of delighting himself in the Lord, his heart has been ensnared by his worldly appetite. There is no hunger for righteousness; there is no burning desire to please the God who created him.

Friends, the Bible advices us to delight ourselves in the Lord and He will give us the desires of our heart (Psalm 37:4). In fact making God our first priority is connected with the promise of God’s provision of all our need, Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
