“Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11

We continue today from where we end yesterday on discipline. God desires for us to live an abun- dant life. However, He has given us the way that we must follow in order to enjoy the life that He wanted to give us. The path that He wants us to take is the path of change into becoming like His son Jesus.

Parents you do have a part to play in this role to the little ones and the young adults, the good news is that disciplining and training your child doesn’t have to be exhausting or frustrating. It just has to be consistent because you’re preparing them to obey when their Heavenly Father asks them to do something. The one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.”

In order to have that right to discipline them you have got to become involved in your child’s world. You are not a dictator administering directives, punishment and discipline. You are forging a relationship with your child. And the closer the bond that you have with your child, the easier it becomes for them to accept your discipline. Josh McDowell says “Rules without a relationship lead to rebellion.”

Brethren, this is a relationship in which you are interested. It’s a relationship in which you are involved and you are invested. Chip Ingram says, “The parent who balances love and discipline with- out compromising either produces well-adjusted children who maintain a positive relationship with Mom and Dad.”

Godly discipline changes our hearts not just our behavior, it secures our eternal life and provides material and spiritual blessings for us. Beloved, this discipline that God has ordained for us can be painful because most of the times He breaks us in order to mold us into a person that He wants us to be; it can hurt us because it removes us from our comfort zones.

The discipline is necessary because it is the only way for us to enjoy God’s abundance for us. Embracing discipline even when it hurts happens when we choose humility to admit our weakness- es and accept the need to change.
